Where's the God? Show Me!

(Lower dimensions can't observe higher dimensions!)

People often ask, during arguments, show me the proof the God exists! Let's try to understand if is possible to prove or disprove the existence of the God with our current understandings.

What are the dimensions?

Let's first try to understand the dimensions.

We live in a three dimensional world, in general. We can only feel or observe things in 3 dimensions (length, width and height/depth).

  • A point has zero dimensions because it has no length, width or height.
  • A line has one dimension only - length.
  • A square (or surface) has two dimensions - length and width.
  • A cube (or volume) has three dimensions - length, width and height.

Albert Einstein and The fourth dimension

Albert Einstein revolutionized our understanding of the universe by introducing the concept of four-dimensional spacetime. In his theory of relativity, space and time are intertwined into a single continuum known as spacetime. This framework consists of three spatial dimensions (length, width, and height) and one temporal dimension (time).

Physicists have since explored the possibility of additional dimensions beyond the four we experience. Some theories, like string theory, suggest that there could be up to eleven dimensions, but these extra dimensions are compactified and not directly observable.

Lower Dimensions can't Observe the Higher Dimensions
  • A one dimensional line consists of infinite number of zero dimensional points.
    • - A line can "see" all the points contained in it but a point can't "see" the line it is contained in!
  • A two dimensional surface consists of an infinite number of one dimensional lines.
    • - A surface can "see" all the lines and points contained in it but a line can't "see" the surface it is in!
  • A three dimensional volume consists of an infinite number of two dimensional surfaces
    • - A volume can "see" all the surfaces, lines and points contained in it. But the surface can't "see" the volume it is contained in!

Consider a snail in a stadium at the center of a football field. We know that the stadium is three dimensional, the two dimensional playground and the stands or parapets where the spectators seat.

The snail may gloud around the entire football field and may never reach the stands and would probably "think" that the stadium is two dimensional.

The Higher Dimensions
  1. A 1 dimensional being can move (or see) only in one direction i.e. on a straight line.
  2. A 2 dimensional being can move (or see) left or right and forward or backward, but not upward or downward.
  3. A 3 dimensional being like humans can move left or right, forward or backward and upward and downward.
  4. A 4 dimensional entity would be able to move in any desired direction in time; past or future.
  5. A 5 dimensional entity can exist in parallel universes with different timelines.
  6. A 6th dimensional entity can move to or see pasts, presents and futures in all the parallel universes (with the restriction of the universes having the same beginning).
  7. A 7th dimensional entity would have infinite forms of it and could travel from one universe to another.
  8. The 8th dimension has a plane of all the possible presents, pasts and futures for all the infinite number of parallel universes. According to the string theory, in the 8th dimension objects do not have any physical existence like our digital world, where we cannot touch the objects but only can see or hear them.
  9. In the 9th dimension, universes may have their own laws of Physics and separate conditions and probabilities of their origin. In the 9th dimension many civilizations or aliens may live simultaneously at the same place. These coexisting civilizations may not see or feel the presence of each other. The entity would have no physical form and would be able to move freely in space and time in any of the universes.
  10. For the 10th dimensional being would be able to control even the space-time and everything present in all the infinite number of universes. Because of the infinite powers of the 10th dimensional being, some researchers also suggest that the God lives in the 10th dimension.
  11. According to string theory, everything in the universe is made up of infinitely small one dimensional vibrating loops called strings. These strings (of the order of 10^-33 cm) vibrate in 11 dimensions. These strings vibrating differently, would constitute subatomic particles like electrons, protons and neutrons etc.

Let's review some verses from Shrimadbhagavadgita which may be related to higher dimensions.

Everything is pervaded by me, and in me. I am not in them.

मया ततमिदं सर्वं जगदव्यक्त मूर्तिना ।
मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि न चाहं तेष्ववस्थितः ॥९:४॥

Lord Krishna says to Arjun:
All of this universe is pervaded by me in an unmanifested form. All the beings are occupying a space in me, but I am not occupied in them.

I am not observable by the manifested beings.

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ।
भूतभृन्न च भूतस्थो ममात्मा भूतभावनः ॥९:५॥

Lord Krishna says to Arjun:
Yet the manifested beings contained in me do not see my power of Yog (union), Maintaining the manifested being but not abiding in the those manifested beings, my soul is the producer of the manifested beings.

Just like the air up and around in the sky, everything is resting (or staying) in me.

यथाकाशस्थितो नित्यं वायुः सर्वत्रगो महान् ।
तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि मत्स्थानीत्युपधारय ॥९:६॥

Lord Krishna says to Arjun:
Just like the air is always there high up everywhere, all the beings are held up on me in the similar manner.

There is an eternity beyond this existence and the unmanifest. That does not get destroyed when everything else is annihilated.

परस्तस्मात्तु भावोऽन्योऽव्यक्तोऽव्यक्तात्सनातनः ।
यः स सर्वेषु भूतेषु नश्यत्सु न विनश्यति ॥८:२०॥

Lord Krishna says to Arjun:
But, beyond this existence, there is the unmanifest, and beyond that there is an eternity, which is not destroyed when all the beings are annihilated.

All the beings are staying inside the ubiquitous (omnipresent) supreme personality which is only achievable through devotion.

पुरुषः स परः पार्थ भक्त्या लभ्यस्त्वनन्यया ।
यस्यान्तः स्थानि भूतानि येन सर्वमिदं ततम् ॥८:२२॥

Lord Krishna says to Arjun:
The supreme personality beyond that, O Paartha (Arjun), is but achievable only by devotion, not by other means. Inside of this all-pervading in this manner, abide all the created beings.

This universe is just a fraction of me.

अथवा बहुनैतेन किं ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन ।
विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत् ॥१०:४२॥

Lord Krishna says to Arjun:
What would you rather want to know more like this, O Arjun? The entire universe is being held by a fraction of me.
